Brazilian mills that crush sugarcane are making more money by making ethanol than sweetener, according to Julio Maria Borges, head of Sao Paulo-based
industry researcher Job Economia & Planejamento.
* As of last wk, in Center South region, nation’s main cane-growing area, raw sugar fetched about 18.5c/lb, Borges said
* That compares with ~19.05c/lb for hydrous ethanol, used in flex-fuel cars, and 20.3c for anhydrous, blended into gasoline
* Cane harvest is starting now, and biofuel stockpiles are typically low before crop is gathered
* NOTE: Brazil is world’s top producer and exporter of sugar.
